The deadline for all convenient stores to install chip readers at the pump is April 17th, 2021

What is EMV (Eurocard, Mastercard and Visa)?

Like magnetic stripe cards, EMV employs methods to help verify the cardholder, authenticating that the person using the credit card, debit card or other chip embedded payment instrument is an authorized cardholder. It is an added layer of protection against payment card fraud. EMV cards store their data on integrated circuit chips making them much more secure than traditional cards because they are encrypted uniquely each time it is accessed.

The move to EMV is a payment fraud liability shift. The shift in payment fraud liability occurs October 1, 2020 f or outdoor (forecourt) automated fueling dispensers.

Complying with the EMV regulation will result in:

  • Reduced cost of chargebacks by avoiding the liability shift
  • Mitigating fraud at site(s)
  • Enhancing customer information security
  • Protecting your brand
